Cosy Autumn

5 interior trends you need to know about this autumn

11 September 2020

As the mornings become chillier and the days shorter, we’re in the mood for indulgent hot chocolates, cosy throws and comforting candles. We all spent a considerable amount of time inside our homes during lockdown, looking at the same four walls, and many will be itching to give the interior of their new build home a little refresh. Autumn is the perfect time to start a new project. After making the most of our time outdoors this summer, now is the time to embrace the interior of your home as the weather turns colder. Here, we round up the five interior trends you need to know about this autumn:

1. Bring the outdoors in with scented candles

Candles are the perfect home accessory for spreading the delights of autumn throughout your home. The season lends itself to so many delicious smells such as hot apple pie and cinnamon buns as well as wonderful fragrances which take inspiration from the outdoors. Think crisp morning air and fresh pine. By updating the candles and wax melts throughout your home, you’ll not only wow your guests with irresistible scents, but you can promote a cosy atmosphere in the evenings too with the soft glow of the flickering flames encouraging you to snuggle down on the sofa with that hot chocolate. There are so many shops and suppliers to choose from. If you’re looking for something truly unique and handmade, have a browse on Etsy. Ebay, Amazon and of course shops and supermarkets such as Next Home and Sainsburys are all great places to start too. We particularly love Autumn Glow from Yankee Candle and Sweater Weather from Bath and Body Works.

2. Pink and walnut are in

We know what you’re thinking. Pink? Isn’t autumn all about the burnt orange and deep red? Well according to Lucy Askew, Interiors Expert at Hillary’s, pink and walnut are having a moment. Pink promotes a sense of tranquillity, something that we’ve all been searching for throughout this difficult year, and Lucy is expecting to see this trend carry on throughout the autumn and winter months. “When paired with contrasting grey, green or deep blue tones, pink can be given the grown-up glow-up it deserves, in any space of the home that you desire” says Lucy (source: House Beautiful). Walnut wood with its rich and inviting tones pairs perfectly with pink. Try introducing walnut into your home with an elegant coffee table, small side table or dining room chairs to promote that autumnal feel.

3. Embrace the night sky with lunar pieces

You know autumn is well and truly here when you have to draw your curtains at 7pm. It’s a shame to have to block out the beautiful moonlight so why not bring it inside this autumn? Moon shaped accessories are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners and the beautiful golds and silvers that these accessories tend to come in work perfectly with deep blues and the walnut wood. Recently, we’ve spotted a variety of lunar inspired mirrors such as this one from Wish. If it’s soft furnishings you’re after, check out this gorgeous scatter cushion from Olivia’s. Lucy also suggests re-creating a starry night sky on the wall: “A gold or silver dust effect using metallic paint on top of a deep blue shade will mimic stars in a night sky without looking too obvious” (source: House Beautiful). The thing we love about this trend is it won’t become outdated quickly as we make the transition from autumn to winter.

4. Pumpkins aren’t just for Halloween

You may associate pumpkins with Halloween but it’s not too early to subtly introduce this autumnal squash into your home – it reminds us of harvest time. By all means leave the carved pumpkins until Halloween but have a look around for cute ornaments, decorative cushions and seasonal prints that you can introduce to inject a sense of autumn into your new build home. We love heading to Homesense in the autumn as you can uncover some really wonderful pumpkin-themed treasures here. This blog from The Home that Made Me will give you a good idea of what you can expect to find in Homesense at this time of year. If you’re on the hunt for some decorative wall art, check out these gorgeous handmade prints from crafters over on Etsy.

5. It’s time to get cosy with a warming throw

We can’t end this blog without mentioning cosy throws! They are an absolute must in the autumn and winter months as it becomes chillier outside. Add a chunky knitted throw or a faux fur version to your living room or bedroom. Not only do they add a touch of softness to a room, they are also perfect for curling up under whilst you enjoy your morning cup of coffee or a seasonal movie on a Saturday night. There are so many beautiful throws to choose from but we particularly love this selection from The White Company.

We hope you’ve been inspired to embrace this wonderful season within your home. If you have started decorating for autumn, we’d love to see your photos! Tag us in your posts on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook and we’ll ensure to like and share your content.
