Meet Jason, our Construction Director at Devonshire Homes

22 May 2020

Working in the housing and construction industry can be very diverse and extremely rewarding. You never know what could be just around the corner and the challenges you may have to face. Just look at the recent Coronavirus pandemic – who could have imagined the change and disruption we’d all experience. No matter what challenges may come our way, at Devonshire Homes we never lose sight of our end goal – to create high-quality, beautiful homes that homeowners can make happy memories in for years to come. It’s why our Construction Director, Jason Hamer, joined Devonshire Homes earlier this year! We caught up with Jason to see how he is getting on in his new role:

Hi Jason! Tell us about your background in the housing and construction industry…

I started out as a time served carpenter/joiner in the early eighties. Following successful completion, I secured a job as a trainee Site Manager for a national housebuilder in 1985. Over the next 10 years, I climbed the ranks, first becoming a Site Manager and then a Senior Site Manager and won several NHBC Pride in the Job Awards along the way.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in the industry?

My interest in the industry stemmed from liking the outdoors and originally working with wood, creating something from nothing. We do the same now. We create special places to live and thriving communities from nothing. It still gives you that same feeling of accomplishment, achievement and pride.

What are your main responsibilities as the Construction Director?

I am responsible for delivery programming, quality and customer care and more importantly, the wellbeing and safety of all the site staff and our subcontractors.

What is a typical day like as the Construction Director?

That’s a difficult question as it changes every day! From budgets to sales meetings, site meetings with the team to meeting with the supply chain, no two days are really the same and you’re always out and about.

What do you enjoy about your job role?

I like how it’s a really diverse role. It is different every day. You can be in a board meeting discussing budgets one day and having on-site discussions with your supply chain over how to box a boiler the next!

What stands out for you about Devonshire Homes as an employer?

Devonshire Homes truly care for their staff. They are honest about the high-quality standard of their new homes, are proud of the product and deliver excellent customer care.

What benefits do you think you bring to the role and to Devonshire Homes?

I bring 39 years of experience to the role, working with both national PLC companies and smaller regional housebuilders. I have a good knowledge of the area and how an efficient supply chain runs; can identify a high-quality product and I believe I understand exactly what today’s house hunters are looking for.

Do you have any aims or goals that you would like to achieve as Construction Director?

Yes, definitely. I would like us to work towards achieving sustained growth and secure external recognition for our high-quality product. I would also like to continue to improve our excellent safety record.
