Kingsbridge school children get a lesson in safety and home building at Applegate Park
14 February 2022Year One pupils from Kingsbridge Community Primary School became VIP visitors for the day at a popular new build home development, as part of a school Geography project.
West Country housebuilder Devonshire Homes hosted 45 children from the local primary school to its popular Kingsbridge development, Applegate Park. Launched in 2020, Applegate Park is a collection of one, two, three and four bedroom homes located off Belle Hill.
Five and six year olds from the nearby primary school were taken on a tour of the development by Site Managers Wayne Skelley and David Bassett, and learnt all about how energy efficient new build homes are. As part of their Geography project, Year One were learning about the differences between urban and rural areas and physical and human features on their local environment. Adding to their learning, Wayne and David explained to the children how new homes are built, how and why Devonshire Homes’ properties are energy efficient and why new build homes are needed in Kingsbridge.
The young Geographers also got the opportunity to see construction in progress, as well as look inside the show home.
In addition to exploring how important energy efficient homes are in protecting the local environment, the students also learnt how to be safe around construction sites. Wayne and David highlighted the dangers of using sites as playgrounds and why there are specific measures in place. Back at the school, Year One participated in a competition which saw each student draw their dream house. Isaac Wall, 6, was the lucky winner of a WH Smith’s voucher with his dream house featuring a quicksand pit, secret underground laboratory, and a space room.
Henry Everitt, Year One teacher at Kingsbridge Community Primary School, commented: “We want to say a huge thank you to the Devonshire Homes team for welcoming our Year One classes to Applegate Park. The children thoroughly enjoyed seeing a working construction site and what they learnt from the visit supported and expanded on what we have been learning in our Geography lessons.”
