5 tips that will take the stress out of moving

29 May 2020

When deciding exactly when to move to a new house, many people will choose to aim for summertime as the days become longer and the weather becomes milder. Moving to a new property is incredibly exciting and a major milestone for many so it’s important that you try to keep the experience as stress-free as possible. Although it can seem daunting moving the contents of your entire house to another location, implementing some simple strategies can really help the process run smoothly. Here are our 5 top tips that will help take the stress out of moving:

1. Use the Devonshire Move scheme to sell your existing property

Do you have a property to sell before you can even start to think about moving? Consider using the Devonshire Move scheme. We know the feeling of panic that can occur when you fall in a love with a new home but you’re afraid it’s going to be snapped up before your existing home sells. If you have your heart set on one of our homes, you can use the Devonshire Move scheme to reserve your desired plot for a minimum of four weeks whilst we work with estate agents to find a buyer for your existing property. Devonshire Move is only applicable to the purchaser’s main residence up to circa £300,000. Click here for the T&Cs and more information.

2. Choose a removal firm early on

So, you’ve found your dream home and you can’t wait to move in. The first task is to choose a removal firm if you require one. We would encourage you to start looking at different companies early on as your desired date could be reserved by another mover. Fridays are very popular for moving so make sure you reserve your date as soon as possible. It would be worth acquiring a number of quotes from different companies to ensure that you are getting the best deal. Planning to move everything yourself? You’ll still have to start thinking about a strategy to ensure a stress-free move. Will you be using one car or two? How many trips to and from the properties do you think you will need to make? Do you need to ensure that family members or friends are on hand to help you? Do you need to hire a van? Start thinking about your removal plans early on and there will be no nasty surprises on the day!

3. Create your ‘Moving House Checklist’

Being organised is the key to a smooth move! Start by making a to do list which details everything from packing up the kitchen cupboards to defrosting the freezer. You can tick off jobs as you do them, ensuring that you don’t miss anything important. MyMove has a thorough checklist here to get you started. Whilst you’re packing your possessions into boxes, remember to label the boxes accurately with what’s inside and which room it should go in. This will ensure that you aren’t ripping open every single box to find the kettle once you’re in your new home! Also, by marking which room the box belongs in, you can ensure each box is placed in its designated room when you arrive at your new home, avoiding the build-up of boxes in the hallway.

4. Book a suitable amount of time off work

Moving to a new house is a big deal and you need to have your mind 100% focused on the process. This means that you should book a suitable amount of time off work if you can. There’s nothing more stressful then trying to move whilst your work phone is ringing in your pocket. If it’s possible, it might be worth thinking about booking a few days off after the moving day itself. This will give you a chance to settle into your new community, unpack and really enjoy your new home.

5. Think about your pets

If you have pets, you will need to think about where they will be on your moving day. We’d advise to book your pet into a boarding kennel or arrange for a friend or family member to look after them for the day. Pets can become quite stressed or excited and the last thing you want to be worrying about when you’re trying to pack the moving van is stepping on the cat’s tail or letting the dog escape. By leaving your beloved pets in the trusted hands of someone else, you can focus on moving to your new home in a stress-free environment. If leaving them with someone else isn’t an option, think about ways in which you can make the move just as relaxing for your pets. The PDSA have some great tips here.
