Top 5 interior trends for 2021 that will transform your home

3 March 2021

The roadmap out of lockdown has finally been shared and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that lockdown life will soon be coming to an end. Now that inviting guests back into our homes seems like a real possibility in the near future, you might be thinking that it’s time to spruce up your interiors. If you’re keen to stay productive during the last stages of the UK national lockdown, why not freshen up your home interiors? Pick up that paint brush and prepare for an online shopping session as it’s time to make over your hideaway. Here, we reveal our top five interior design trends set to be big in 2021 to get you started.

1. Your Granny’s furnishings are making a comeback

As one of the most unique interior trends of the year, the ‘grandmillenial’ style is all about mixing cosy nostalgia with a touch of modern flair. Many of us will have fond memories of visiting a grandparent’s house and instantly feeling safe, warm and cosy. During a time which is triggering anxiety and stress in many of us, this interior trend may just be what you need to lift your mood. Start by introducing patterns, colour and layers into your home, anything that you might find in your grandparents’ house. Finish the look with a couple of modern pieces and you will be on your way to creating a relaxing space. Check out these grandmillenial ideas from Industville to get started.

2. Pampas grass is here to stay

Popular in the 70s, pampas grass flooded our Instagram feed in 2020 and its popularity is set to continue throughout 2021. Native to South America, this beautiful dried plant can be seen in the homes of Kim Kardashian, Mrs Hinch and Rochelle Humes to name a few, and is very versatile. Grab a vase and start creating your own pampas grass bouquet to add a touch of style to any room. You can keep it simple by displaying a big bunch of the classic pampas grass, or you can mix it up by adding other dried flowers to your vase such as bunny tail grass and gypsophilia (also known as baby’s breath). Etsy is a great online shop for pampas grass with many sellers creating bouquets so that you don’t have to.

3. Bring the outdoors in with earthy tones

Earth colours are set to be a major interior trend for 2021. The past year has seen many of us connect with nature and this new-found love of the great outdoors is starting to make its way inside the home. Think dark blue and green colours but try not to overdo it. These are great colours to use when creating an accent wall, tiling or purchasing large furniture pieces but make sure you throw some lighter colours in the mix too. Try adding accessories in colours such as dusty pink, fresh white or light grey to compliment the earthy tones and you will soon have a space which projects a sense of calm and tranquillity.

4. Get creative with peel and stick wallpaper

Wallpaper is having a moment and it looks like it is here to stay. Perfect for injecting some creativity into your home, wallpaper is available in many designs, so you are sure to find a pattern that suits the interior of your home. Don’t fancy spending days with wallpaper adhesive all over your hands? Try the peel and stick version! This is a great option for those who rent a property or for homeowners who change their minds regularly as it can easily be removed. We love this range of peel and stick wallpaper from Spoonflower.

5. Green kitchens are in

Looking to freshen up your kitchen décor? Consider painting your kitchen cabinets green. This is set to become an interior trend in 2021 as it works with both cool and warm colour palettes. Choose a lighter shade if you’re keen to keep your kitchen looking fresh, light and airy and opt for a darker shade to create that warm, cosy feeling. If you’re considering introducing green into your kitchen, think about the counter tops too. Interior Designer Rachel Street told Insider: “Pairing green cabinets with Carrara-marble counters can help highlight the grey veining in the stone.”
