Five family activities to enjoy in the South West this winter

12 December 2022

A chill may be in the air but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get out and about to enjoy all that the South West has to offer this winter. There are so many family activities for all ages in this wonderful region from Christmas markets to craft workshops, festive dinners to carol singing, you’re sure to find something that the whole family will enjoy.

Our current new homes developments are located across the South West with easy access to town and city centres, giving our communities plenty of choice when it comes to planning their family activities. We’ve rounded-up some of the best events which are close to our new build home sites…

1. The Big Sheep Christmas Farmers Market, Bideford

Oh, we do love a Christmas market at this time of year. If you are on the hunt for unique, handmade gifts or would simply like to indulge in local produce, head to The Big Sheep in Bideford. Just two and a half miles down the road from our new East-the-Water site, The Grange, The Big Sheep’s market will run on Saturday 3rd, 10th, 17th and Thursday 22nd December, 9am to 2pm.

You’re going to love this South West Christmas market if you’re a foodie. From free range turkeys to delectable cheeses, fresh sprouts on stalks to organic meats, this is your one stop shop for your Christmas dinner. With craft stalls and a chance to win a hamper on offer, you can easily spend the morning here.

2. Carols on the Quay, Kingsbridge

Whether you’re five or 95 years old, everyone loves a beautifully sung carol at Christmas. Searching for carol singing in Devon? Join the incredible carol singers by the Christmas tree on the Quay in Kingsbridge on Friday 16th December at 6pm. They’ll be singing all the classics and will be spreading plenty of festive cheer.

If you’re looking for a new home in Kingsbridge, why not book an appointment with our Sales Executives at Applegate Park before you head to the Quay? Located just a 20-minute walk away on Belle Hill, we have a range of two, three and four bedroom homes ready to reserve. Take a look around our show home before you put your carol singing skills into practice. All proceeds from the carols will be donated to the Devon Air Ambulance.

3. Craft & Dine festive workshops, Bovey Tracey

Head to the popular House of Marbles in Bovey Tracey this December to take part in some festive workshops and indulge in a two-course dinner. The wreath making workshop has sold out but there are still spaces available for the festive wrapping skills and paper decorations, festive table decoration and Christmas cake decorating workshops.

Running every Thursday evening in December from 8th to 22nd, these workshops will give you the chance to get creative and indulge in locally sourced food. Workshops are £25 per person and for an additional £20, you can enjoy a two-course meal and a soft drink in The Old Pottery Restaurant after the workshop has finished. For those who live at our Bovey Tracey site, Longston Cross, this festive evening is just a short walk away!

4. Film night, Crediton

Take a break from Christmas events and avoid festive overload with a film night at Cheriton Fitzpaine Parish Hall.

On Sunday 11th December at 4pm, the Hall will be showing Fisherman’s Friends: One and All for just £5 per adult and £3 per child. Doors open at 3:30pm with refreshments available. Sit back and relax with the family as you enjoy the story of the popular Cornish band. The film picks up where the first instalment left off as the group struggle with their second album after the highs of performing on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury.

This will be a great event for homeowners living at our Crediton site, Tarka View, as it is only a 15-minute drive away. Interested in moving to our popular Crediton site so that you can enjoy events like this all year round? We have one home left for sale at Tarka View. Find out more here.

5. Tunnel of Lights, St. Austell

Cornwall has some fantastic events for the whole family to enjoy too, including the Tunnel of Lights at the Shipwreck Treasure Museum in St. Austell.

From 3rd December to 8th January, journey through magical Christmas settings at this museum full of treasures. Perfect for families, explore Narnia’s winter wonderland and marvel at the room filled with giant baubles. Wander through Candy Land, walk through a world of beautifully wrapped gifts and even enjoy the museum’s mini German Christmas market. Your visit will be topped off with a walk through the UK’s longest tunnel of indoor lights.

Tickets start from £12.50 for adults and £8.50 for children. Under 5’s go free at this Christmas event in Cornwall. Whilst you’re in the area, make sure you book an appointment with our Sales Executives to view our beautiful new build homes at Gwallon Keas, just a 20-minute walk away from the museum.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our round-up of the top five family activities to enjoy in the South West this winter. For Christmas activities, make sure you book early to avoid disappointment!
